Naples Homeowners: Identifying Potential Foundation Problems

Homes require maintenance to stay in tip-top shape. But, sometimes, repairs can be costly. Correcting foundation problems ranks high on the list of expensive fixes. However, identifying potential foundation problems early might save Naples homeowners thousands of dollars. While huge cracks quickly throw up red flags, foundation issues aren’t always so easy to spot.

Foundation problems can be some of the costliest to repair for Naples homeowners. Learn how to identify potential foundations early on.

Identifying Potential Foundation Problems

Doors and Windows

Some squeaky doors and windows only need a squirt of WD-40 to work properly again. However, if you find it increasingly difficult to open or close them, this could be an indicator of a bigger problem. The same goes for gaps between the window frame and walls. As a foundation shifts, it distorts the alignment of your Naples home’s frame. Take care of these issues early to save big bucks later on.

Floors and Walls

Next, keep an eye out for floors or ceilings that sag or slant. Shifting weight puts more pressure on other areas of your home, creating sagging. You can use a level to see whether your floor is slanting or not. If the slant continues to increase over a period of time, call a pro in to check it out. Another indicator of a potential problem is a bowed wall. However, don’t mistake a large paint blister/bubble for bowing. That should also be addressed since it could be from heat or water damage. But it does not mean there’s a foundation problem. Have you noticed nails pulling away from the drywall? If this happens regularly, it could be due to foundation problems.

Smells

Musty, moldy smells may point to a plumbing problem. On the other hand, they can also signify a potential foundation issue. If you see mold or smell mildew, try to locate the source of the moisture right away. Check for leaks around the windows or other areas that might be letting moisture gather in the area.

Chimney

Finally, have you looked up at your chimney and thought that it appeared to be leaning slightly? That might be the beginning of a foundation issue. If your chimney moves too much, it could fall over and rip a hole in your roof. Or, worse yet, it could tumble down, raining bricks on unsuspecting people down below. As soon as you notice that your chimney is leaning to one side or the other, contact a specialist to come out right away.

Large cracks are the most obvious signs of potential foundation problems. Call a pro if you see any of the following around your Naples home:

  • Any crack more than 1/8″ wide,
  • Cracks that are narrow on one end and wide on the other,
  • Create a 45 degree angle or run horizontally,
  • Have any leaking water coming from it, or
  • Cracks that run in a “stair-step” pattern on the inside or outside of your home.

Liven Up Your Naples Home With a Fresh Coat of Paint

Spring means renewal. It’s also when many Naples homeowners choose to switch things up in their home decor. That includes new paint on the walls. Painting is one of the easiest things you can do that make a big change on the look of a room. Liven up your Naples home with a fresh coat of one of these paint colors.

Spring is a time for renewal and change. Liven up your home with a fresh coat of one of these Naples home paint colors currently on trend.

Naples Home Paint Colors for Spring

Persimmon

This warm spicy hue works great in a dining room or kitchen. If you feel it’s too bold, use it as an accent above your kitchen backsplash and the wall above the stove. Or choose one wall in the room to use as a focal point/accent wall. Silver accents work great with a lighter persimmon color while a darker, reddish toned persimmon color pairs well with hunter green.

Yellow

Another great option for your Naples home paint colors is yellow. Avoid neon or greenish-tinted yellows. Instead, opt for the pastel variety of yellow. Kitchens, bathrooms, and sunrooms play up the sunlight with a lovely soft shade of yellow. If a navy-colored theme runs through your room, add a deeper yellow accent like marigold to the mix.

Turquoise

The blue-green color of turquoise adds an earthy quality to any Marco Island/Naples home. With the ocean right outside our back door, it makes sense to bring some of that beauty inside your home as well. But too much can feel a little overwhelming. Stick with an accent wall in any room in your home: master bedroom, family room, bathroom, kitchen. Create the perfect beachy theme or spa-like tranquil feel anywhere throughout your home.

Mauve/Lilac

A similar light-colored purple, the final Naples home paint colors to consider when livening up your home are mauve and lilac. Mauve tends to be a softer tone of purple, adding a lovely neutral background to any living space. Lilac ranges from light to ultraviolet. It works well with dark cherry wood in a library or den.

If you’re looking for a change without breaking the bank, consider painting the interior walls of your home. These bright spring Naples home paint colors reinvigorate tired old walls. And, if you want a small change but don’t want to commit to painting the entire wall one color, add the new paint to just one area for an accent wall. Make a powerful statement without overwhelming yourself or your visitors. What color did you add to your home? Which room did you change up? Was it the whole room or just an accent wall? Naples Home Renovation: What to Tackle First

Updating your kitchen. Enhancing your curb appeal. Installing smart home features. So many projects. So little time. You want to make some changes to your home. But which Naples home renovation projects should you tackle first? And, more importantly, which projects are worth bothering with at all? The answer depends on why you’re renovating, what your budget is, and what the return on investment might be for each project.

You might want to change everything about your new home. But knowing which Naples home renovation project to tackle first can be beneficial.

Naples Home Renovation: What to Tackle First

Why Are You Renovating?

Do you plan on selling your home in the future? Are you looking to create a more comfortable environment for you and your family to live? Is this property a “flip” that you never plan on living in? Do you want to rent it out? Whatever your end goal is will help you determine which Naples home renovation projects should take precedence.

Budget

Larger Naples home renovation projects might have to wait if you’re on a limited budget. Want to knock down a few walls to open up your living area? Feel like tearing out that tiny corner shower and totally revamping the master bath? Maybe start out with smaller projects and save the larger ones for later. For example, painting walls and changing fixtures help create a totally new look without busting your budget. When your equity grows, you receive a bonus at work or your tax refund comes in, then you might want to tackle the larger items on your Naples home renovation list.

Consider Your Return on Investment (ROI)

First of all, keep this fact in mind: rarely do homeowners recoup 100% of the money they invest in home improvement projects. However, some Naples home renovation projects provide a higher ROI than others. Garage doors top the list with 98.3% ROI. Next, replacing your front door with a new steel one reaps 91.3% ROI. Adding a wood deck, a minor kitchen overhaul (replacing cabinets, counters, appliances, flooring), and replacing your siding provides 82.8%, 81.1%, and 76.7% ROI respectively.

What Naples home renovation projects have you completed on your home recently? What do you wish you had done differently? Please share your stories in the comments below.
